At what age is it recommended to spay or neuter my pet?

It is important to wait until your animal is fully grown before having them sterilised. For a cat, the sterilization is ideally performed around 8 months of age. For a dog, it will depend on its breed. A small dog will ideally be sterilized between 7 and 8 months of age, whereas a medium to large breed would ideally be sterilized between 10 and 12 months of age. For giant breeds, it is better to perform the surgery at a later age, after 18 months.

At what age is it necessary to vaccinate my pet?

For kittens or puppies, the recommended vaccination protocol for the base vaccine (named DAPPV for dogs and FVRCP for cats) by our veterinarians is at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age, followed by a booster in one year, then a booster every 3 years.

Rabies is an easily preventable fatal disease by the administration of the rabies vaccine. It is necessary to travel to many different countries with your pet. The vaccine can be administered starting at 12 weeks old and is given a year later, followed by a booster every three years for dogs, but it is given annually for cats. The main carriers of rabies on the island of Montreal are bats, but raccoon, skunks and other mammals are other common carriers as well.

For the vaccination protocols of other vaccines such as leptospirosis, kennel cough (bordetella) and leukemia, please call a member of our team.

Is it necessary to deworm my pet?

It is recommended to administer a dewormer to your kitten or puppy monthly until the age of 6 months old and to have a stool analysis performed to search for potential parasites your pet may carry, such as intestinal worms, coccidia and giardia.

Is it necessary to provide oral care for my pet at home?

It is recommended to brush your pet’s teeth if possible, using enzymatic toothpaste for pets, ideally every day or every other day. It is possible to find alternative oral care products, such as dental diets, dental treats labelled with the VOHC seal (Veterinary Oral Health Council), dental chews, oral gels, Oral rinses and water additives. Discuss with our veterinarians to make a plan that is adapted to your animal
